Post Weathering White?
OK, not ready yet but the wheels are turning and am thinking about how to go about weathering my X Wing Fighter. I have never tried to weather white paint before. I have some of AK's products and am looking foward to trying them maybe. Any of you Sci Fi or Aircraft builders have any tips on weathering a white craft, with AK's products or without ?

Tony-
I have the AK products and I cannot say I have a lot of expeience with them- but what I have seen I like!

If it were me- I'd paint a piece of sheet styrene with the same white you use on the X-wing. If you clear the X-wing- clear the styrene sheet as well...etc. etc.

Then I would use the AK products as filters- thin them a lot like 10:1, White spirit: AK product. That will give you some tinted adjacent panels.

AK products straight from the bottle would be way too heavy over white.

My opinion... FWIW

the other option might be oil paint dots blended in with thinner, plenty of drying time to correct if not happy with the finish :?:

Tony, are you planning on painting it a pure white or were you planning on going with an off white color?

I painted it pure white in places and a very slightly off white in places. I have to do a test as Steve said, AK products, oil washes. dot method etc on a sheet and see what I come up with. The entire thing will be filtered so I think that'll cut down on the pure whites harshness.

Tony-
on your test piece try some colors that you would NOT expect to look right. Obviously, Black, gray, steel filters are going to look right...

I am thinking like a prussian blue and an orange-ish yellow. VERY thin- but you will be surprised at the effects you will achieve.

Yes indeed, I want to do some contrasting panels here and there, but the entire thing will have to go through at least one filter, havent figured out just how weathered it will be though. The decals are going to be a project not looking foward to that part. They're going to have to be scuffed up a bit too. Time will tell, and going by my progress rate its going to some time !!
