Re: Would love to have seen this for real...
Watched this last Friday on the banks of the Hudson River a few miles from my house. It was on its way to JFK and eventually to be seen aboard the USS Intrepid. Not a launch but the best I could do. It was climbing and banking for a turn around at the point I was standing. After watching the video I remembered the story my brother told of a shuttle landing. He was working as a contractor at Edwards AF base in Calif. when the shuttle was diverted due to bad weather in Florida. He was out at 4:30 or 5am getting in his car when he heard the sound barrier boom. He knew the shuttle was coming in and drove about 1 mile from his hotel on to the base past all the reporters waiting to get in. He had clearance to pass on in. He remembered a dirt road that went down towards the runway so he decided to take it. When he reached the end there was the space shuttle as it had just landed and stopped and no one was even there yet except him. This all happened within a few minutes of hearing the sonic boom and he was really shocked how quickly it had arrived. He decided he better get out of there before he was arrested and proceeded to his work area. He told a few people what he saw and how surprised he was at how quickly it took place and they told him the landing is really a "controlled crash" as they come in so fast. Pam

It's all a bit reminiscent of Concord etc., these are being retired much too early. Vinnie

Hi Steve - My brother told it much better than I did. It was the short time span that really blew him away. According to the NASA web site it is traveling at 750 mph or 1207.01 km/h when it breaks the sound barrier upon reentry and in less than a few minutes it had landed! Pam

Hi Pam, its still really cool and something I have never heard of. I know after a rough landing on the charter holiday flights, the crew sometimes talk about "a controlled crash" and " any landing you can walk away from is a good one!" though they usually wait until you can't hear them Steve H
