As it says do you have a spare or unused or to be unseen Maybach engine which looks like this



It is the engine for the Panzer IB which is a straight 6 cylinder water cooled and was also used in a long list of Pz IBs

It is also in other early German 1/2 tracks primarily the SdKfz 250 as the Maybach HL 42 LR.



As I'm sure you have noticed the 2 engines do look quite different
According to all the research I have done, the engines are supposed to be similar in look as the 42 is just a re-bore of the 38 with the numbers referring to the cylinder capacity in liters I.E. 3.8 and 4.2 litre engines. The BHP is supposed to be the same but the torque is better with the bigger engine, that's why it was used in the early 1/2 tracks such as

The Maybach HL 42 is available via Great Wall Hobby but it isn't quite what I'm after.

T cut a very long story short, I am planning to build a Tristar PzKpfw 1A ohne Aufbau with a IB to complement it, which will need a full interior and I would like the engine to be able to show the difference between them.

If anyone has the Maybach 38 and is interested in passing it on, please let me know I am open to negotiate, but I haven't found one anywhere yet, though it could be in a kit i haven't been able to trace as yet.

Sorry for being long winded, but I have now reached a dead end, so I thought I would open the process to one and all.

I'll have a look on some kits when i get home from work. Not sure if the Dragon 250/9 has one in it. If it has, you are welcome to it.

Those two engines in the reference photos look different, because they are? The first one looks like a V type layout and not a straight inline 6.

You are right, what I have seen as the Maybach 38 and have the picture of, isn't

I re-checked my references and it said

The Pz.1 Ausf.B used the Maybach NL 38 TR, six-cylinder, in-line, gasoline engine. It looks a lot like half of their famous V-12....

with the picture you have quite rightly called a V-6 style engine

The 2nd picture is the right one and cross checking my other references there is no doubt I had them the wrong way round

I can't be the first one to take the first reference they find as being gospel and then keep seeing all the other material as wrong D'oh, what a Homer

I wish I had thrown this open sooner, thanks for your insight Woody, I guess all that time tinkering with the tanks and military equipment has paid off, for me, at least

Steve, don't be embarrassed. That is quite a misleading statement. I don't think i would ever, or have ever seen, a 6 cylinder inline engine described as half of a V12. To me, half of a V12 would be a V6

Also i would have thought the the 38 would have looked the same (the basic engine anyway) as the 42. That .4 of a litre would just come from the extra volume from the reworked bores and/or combustion chambers. The external appearance and size may not really be different. I am not an expert on that era of engines though A lot of modern car engines vary in capacity but don't change externally in appearance.
