Introduction J's Works are a relatively new company hailing from China, and are only available from LuckyModel and their own website! They manufacture an ever expanding range of diorama accessories and modelling aids such as masks, in a variety of materials, these latest four silicone moulds being the latest in a series representing different types of pavement or road.
Set Contents Each of the silicone moulds measure approximately 12.5 by 9cm, each producing a finished cast piece approximately 11 by 7cm and 0.8cm thick. Each mould is supplied in a small plastic wallet, within which there is also a cardboard backing piece and header with instructions on using the mould.
PPA3041 and PPA3042 are both cobblestone moulds, large and small respectively, whilst PPA3043 and PPA3044 both consist of hexagonal stone sections, again large and small respectively.
Each of the moulds are manufactured from white high density silicone rubber, and with a little care should last a lifetime. It's simply a case of mixing up you wall filler or plaster, add a little colour if you wish, since it helps when (and if) you knock chips off later, and spread into the mould. Once dry, each completed section just pops out of the extremely flexible mould and is ready. The mould can then be run under a tap (faucet) dried, and is ready for further use.
Each of the sections produced from each of the moulds, is shaped in such a way that they interlock with further sections should you wish to make them larger. The fit isn't perfect of course, but then it shouldn't be any way. A little more wall filler or plaster would ensure a completely disguised appearance, and none of the panels are sufficiently regular that a pattern would be too evident. In the examples of each of the moulds shown below I've used Hydrocal, an extremely tough yet lightweight modelling plaster that comes in a carton. I've yet to try the moulds using ordinary wall filler, but rest assured when I do, I'll mention it here!
Conclusion Another great set of moulds from J's Work, at a extremely reasonable price too. Of course there are many different ways to manufacture your own cobbled street sections etc., and every modeller seems to have their favourite method, but when it comes to something quick, convenient and not too costly...these moulds are hard to beat! My thanks to J's Work for the review sample.
